One of the pieces that fascinated us at IMM Cologne was the Pouf de Paille by Tete Knecht. The unusual combination of materials made this memorable, so we tracked down Knecht for more information. We were surprised to discover footwear of the same materials, but we should not have been, as this designer’s portfolio is full of interesting designs.

We recently saw your Pouf de Paille at IMM Cologne and are curious about this combination of straw and latex that you have concocted for some of your products. What led you to this particular pair of materials?
I created this combination, after many experiments with materials. The straw absorbs the latex, and from this mix an elastic, flexible and resistant skin is formed.

Straw is quite rough, although the addition of latex must make it somewhat smoother. How practical is this type of surface for furniture? Do you intend these pieces to function more along the lines of an art installation or is your goal to have them stand alone as functional furniture?
Both.
These are prototypes, or artists’ proofs.
But, as any new idea, the mix must be developed; the objective is to have a second generation a way to transform it in an industrial one.
Again the blend of straw and latex is used for slippers and clogs, so we must ask what inspired these designs? Is this material viable for footwear and other accessories?
In our imagination, straw is associated with nature. It also evokes collective memories and sensations: it’s soft, comfortable, hot. Since prehistory, it was used inside shoes, for warmth, and it was used for mattress. Mixed with latex – a natural resin, I can mold, and bring the straw from inside to the surface. And it becomes also the structure of the object.

She didn't fully answer your two part questions. which is disappointing.
Assuming the composition is stable (i.e. doesn't shed) this would be very attractive in a similarly minimalist, industrial setting. Props!
However, I looked up the Master of Design at ECAL in her curriculum and the site seemed to empty/failed. Does anyone know about this program?
Enjoy these things for their aesthetic value. This stuff won't make it to the garage-sale stage.
i would love a pair...
it's simply amazing
