You may have noticed a button in the right column for Simple Solutions. It's a contest that our long time advertiser Simplehuman does every year for design students. MoCo Loco is a media sponsor this year. Being somewhat contrarian we liked the contest's focus on the relatively unglamorous homewares category. Last year's winners pulled us in, that's Jason Culler's mail collector + tote above, "Designed for homes with mail slots in the door, the mail collector hangs in the mail slot, collecting whatever mail is slipped through, and can be easily removed for pick-up and sorting, thus fixing the problem of scattered mail on the floor.". See more winning designs after the jump.
The contest is open to students of any NASAD-accredited school. If you think you can do better, and wouldn't mind a $5000 scholarship, the contest deadline is this Friday. See more info on how to apply here.

JonMikel Rodriguez's countertop pot & pan rack, "The rack aligns the handles of the pots and pans and gradually widens so that your largest skillet fits on the lowest tray, and so on up in descending size, until your smallest saucepan fits nicely on the top tray, making for an eye-appealing grab-and-go capability.".

Sara Downes' ensemble dog feeder, "Evocative of a small stainless steel step trashcan with an attached dog dish, the feeder measures, stores, and dispenses dry dog food with a simple press of the pedal.".
