Yes, by now, there is no one in the design world who is unaware of Tokujin Yoshioka’s status as Design Miami’s Designer of the Year 2007, but the installation in his honour on the top floor of the Moore Building in the design district was too good to ignore. Yoshioka’s signature straws made their way down the stairs, on their own and in the hands (and hair) of his admiring public. But they would not be missed: the entire floor was a world of plastic straws in heaps, too enticing not to jump into. Various designs were stationed along the route, but it was the straws that delighted the big kid in everyone. There had been a buzz throughout the building, but it culminated in excitement and design joy as we reached the top, a new age wintry wonderland. And now, not a peep more out of us on Tokujin Yoshioka. Really.
