This Table Will Self-Destruct
Studio 1 A.M. presents This Table Will Self-Destruct, a table that combines slag, an industrial by-product, instead of traditional cement for the top and reclaimed walnut for the base. The element that really makes this table stand out is that each tabletop is different: each one is a grid of pixels and every time one is produced, a pixel is removed. The shape will continue to change in this limited edition series until it is no longer aesthetically pleasing or practical. The edition number will indicate the number of pixels removed.

Slag does not replace the cement in an Concrete mix. Fly Ash can be substituted up to 40% for the cement but you still require some cement. Slag can be used as aggregate in place of traditional sands and gravel. However I question how much slag was used in these tables because slag is black in color and therefore to get a white concrete you would have to use a very large amount of pigment to get that white look.
