Portable Collectable Lights Coat Rack
by sabine7 / October 9, 2007

The Portable Collectable Lights Coat Rack was designed by Merrill Lyons at the Rhode Island School of Design. The idea was to create lighting for a specific demographic: the young, urban dweller. Lyons' goal was to combine items from the past with a contemporary aesthetic and use. The lights sit on a shelf that holds rechargeable reservoirs above and hooks below.

This is a fine example of urban design. The texture, form and composition of the piece is remarkable. It displays a continuity of fixture, a supple position of thought. Well done.

I have experienced this prototype in person and it a truly great idea! Merrill has uniquely combined lighting with portability and fused it appropriately with another piece of furniture- the coat rack. The portable lights are scaled perfectly and emulate a variety of kitschy classics making them fun to carry around the house as night lights.

Such an interesting mix of classic looking figurines with contemporary lighting. I have been a follower of Merrill's work for many years and this piece is one of my favorites!

I'm deeply captivated by how the blue light glows! It nostalgically reminds me of the early 80's Disney sci-fi classic film "Tron"!
