MUSEUM
Museum of Art and Design | 212.956.3535| madmuseum.org | 40 West 53rd Street
Tucked demurely behind the MoMA gift shop, the Museum of Art and Design has some of the best exhibits in the city. Curator Dorothy Globus, who has a background in the history of fashion, has put together shows that range from radical knitting to modern interpretations of classical Chinese furniture, the current exhibit. The museum is also dedicated to showcasing new talent, like designers Dror Benshetrit and Althea Merback, whose pieces were recently
featured in the Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting show.
BOOKS
Spoonbill & Sugartown, Booksellers | 718.387.7322 | spoonbillbooks.com | 218 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211

With more heavy books than a law office and an entire bookshelf devoted to Moleskine sketchbooks, Spoonbill & Sugartown knows its audience. Its walls are paved with the latest issues of magazines like Metropolis, V, and Butt, and I find myself browsing here each time I come home from Manhattan. I'm slightly embarrassed to say, but this is my favorite bookstore in the city; they've got us pegged.
RAMEN
Four of the city's best ramen joints nest surprisingly close to each other in the East Village. Momofuku is the most modern, with innovative soups like kimchee ramen. The non-ramen dishes, like the roast duck sandwiches with chives, are actually the best. Rai Rai Ken is truly a second home for me; during my first New York winter, just the steam from a bowl of their miso ramen was soul-sustaining. Setagaya is the newest, yet also the most traditional. Shio ramen with pork slices, seaweed, burdock, and spring onion is the only choice on the menu, and they make it perfectly; their clear broth is particularly tasty. Minca specializes in curry ramen, a viscous dish from Japan's icy north that's surprisingly good on a hot day in the city.

WORK
'sNice | 212-645-0310 | 45 Eighth Ave., New York, NY 10014 at 4th St.

New York is full of people who love their work, and if you're coming to visit you should definitely join us. With its wide tables and WiFi, 'sNice, a cafe in the West Village, is the perfect place to have a small meeting or put time into your own projects. Likemind, a meeting of creative people that's open to anyone, meets there once a month. Jelly, a co-working session started by Amit Gupta, goes down every two weeks or so.
DENIM
Blue in Green | 212.680.0555 | blueingreensoho.com | 8 Greene St. New York, NY 10013
Before the 1950's, denim was made in narrow widths on looms, dyed with natural indigo, and stitched with selvages to make simple, durable jeans that became beautiful with ware. Blue in Green can cover our lower half in the latest old-loom denim from Scandinavia and Japan, including Sugar Cane- jeans made from the tall plant's fibers.
