TreeHugger's Lloyd Alter reviewed the book Small Living this week, the latest of many compilations available on small houses. I have to agree with his summation, it is "tasty eye candy" and although the copy might not be as meaningful as it should be, the selection of houses makes up for it. Of particular note, of the many houses featured, we noticed Australian architect Drew Heath’s Zigzag House. Zigzag is a nine square meter cabin "a camp-like existence from which the environment could be observed and discovered.". It's described as a wheel-less camper that gets 'packed away' when not in use and whose kitchen and lav are outside, part of the cabins' deck. It's illustrative of the thinking that makes the Small Living homes special, they aren't cookie cutter, each is tailored to specific needs and environments; smart and stylish solutions to space and budget constraints. Dare we say making more out of less. Hardcover, 203 pages, well illustrated, $23.07 at Amazon.
