Two Questions for Amrita Takhar
Posted by sabine7 Interview | 12 Apr 07 | Comments (1) | Stumble

amrita_takhar_2.jpgAmrita Takhar is a design student whose projects clearly indicate an avid interest in sustainability. Her Museum Chair is one whose original cane seat has been painstakingly restored and encased to protect it from further damage while having it endure as a functional part of the design. Her Endangered Structures Pillows encourage us to physically embrace the past in order to realize its value in an effort to preserve it. Some of her ideas are obviously about recycling, like the Reflect jewellery made out of broken light reflectors from cars and bikes or the macramé plant hangers from net bags, but Takhar is not afraid to provoke or upset the viewer to get her point across. Flying Blind is just such a project. In an attempt to call attention to the plight of birds in urban areas who are disoriented by the lights of city buildings and end up injured or worse, Takhar has created an innocuous-looking nest. The viewer peers in, only to set off a motion sensor that trips a bright light for a temporary shock. We wanted to know more about Takhar’s motivation.

Museum Chair.

Amrita, obviously your previous studies in human ecology have shaped many decisions made during the design process. Do you intend to continue to marry the two disciplines?
Human Ecology is the study of the interrelationships of life and identifying how to enhance these relationships for the better. It's about finding a balance within your environment. It is definitely an asset in design.

You have some amazing photographs of bugs from all over the world (we especially like the close-up of the slug, to our surprise). Is there any likelihood of incorporating some of this into your design work?

I take photos of bugs because I love seeing their facial expressions and incredible patterns and textures. They remind me to look at the details. I am sure they will eventually seep into my work.

The world is already full of 'stuff' – as a designer, why do you choose to create more?
I agree there are already too many things in this world which is why I attempt to consider environmental issues in my design. I enjoy making garbage look unrecognizable, thinking about where things come from and where they will end up. Another way to battle our consumptionitis is to make stuff that will be last generations, rather than be discarded. There are billions of things being made and it is the designers responsibility to address the lifecycle and impact of the things we produce. Stuff will always be a part of our reality, so I have started to explore these issues in my work.

I love the ghost-like quality of that chair. It reminds me of the Cast-Off Skin electrical plug by Yoh Komiyama, the winner of the recent Muji Award. I talk about how stories are the starting point for my designs, but these truly are stories that happen to take the form of physical objects. really inspiring work.
