And the Timpins go to...
by Harry / March 29, 2007

Timpins designer Nate Archer has chosen his favorite answer to the question Tell us what your favorite snack food is, and, if well-designed, would you wear it with pride?

Says Nate,

i like jw's "Right now, though, I'm all about the Girl Scout Cookies, so an assortment of GS cookie pins would be fantastic." I'm assuming here he means the vanilla and chocolate ones before the redesign. so that is my pick.

I think Nate is right on the mark here. Moving further away from the actual food experience, something could be done, designwise, in terms of the cult/myth and evolution of the whole Scout movement and where it finds itself on our sociocultural map today. Whoops! Sorry for the mouthful - I think i just made that snack un-fun!

Where does Scouting fit on our sociocultural map? I made it to Eagle Scout in 1996, but I haven't seen a scout troop in ages. In fact, I don't think I've purchased Girl Scout Cookies from an actual girl scout for at least seven years. The parents do the selling now, it seems ;)

One of my first experiences with design was definitely Boy Scouts. Badge design, the Handbook diagrams, learning semaphore and Morse code- these things probably influence me more today than the knots, tree identification techniques, and survival skills that was crammed into my brain.
