Charge Box SL12
by Harry / March 2, 2007

ding3000 designed the Charge Box SL12 as a container for keeping and charging mp3-players, mobile phones or digital cameras. A multiple plug socket is hidden away inside the solid coated steel body as are battery chargers and cables. Gadgets sit on the felt pad above. Just one of many objects in a portfolio that includes Billy Wilder, the wildly growing rack makes IKEA's billy shelf “wilder”, Oderda table with add-on components, Oderso modular and asymmetrical shelf-system with colored edges, Kerzenhaltding electrical socket candleholder, Abrollding reinvented tape dispenser, and Scherze candle with switch.

I encountered at least two of these products at Ambiente in Frankfurt, and I have to say, I wouldn't give either a ringing endorsement.

The chargebox seems a good idea, but it came across as superfluous. Moreoever, something about the proportions - studied though I'm sure they are - felt off. In the end, a cord still winds from the charge box to the wall socket.

The "Abrollding" tape dispenser also caught my eye, but upon interaction, it, too, seemed bizarre. It was either too weighty or not weighty enough. As for the other objects (and these), I'm curious to hear what others have to say.

I, for one, am getting a bit exhausted of all this specious design for design's sake. (I am speaking at large here.)

IMHO the ChargeBox could be improved (made more green) by having a master switch--chargers still draw energy even when not charging. Also, by the looks of it, the lid may sit ajar if the user doesn't negotiate with the tangled mess of cords. That could be fixed by hinging the lid or placing ledges inside the bottom for the lid to rest upon. But a very cool idea and looks nice. I give it an A-!
