SAW
by Greg / February 22, 2007

Here's a preview of what we'll see at the Toronto Interior Design show this year. Matthew Kroeker's new SAW lighting prototype, per the designer; "an obvious and fun reference to the furniture making of our ancestors, the table uses rift sawn White Oak in the simple and efficient form of the traditional sawhorse. The saw cuts on the surface accept the nickel plated steel bar and post assembly to provide the effect of energizing the light once in place. Three sizes of slots enable three brightnesses, and a fourth slot is an off position". JGB

Furniture as the one-liner. Cute but irrational. I like this better:

It doesn't look like a working model.

irrational? more like witty and sophisticated if i do say so myself. ;) matt... i love this concept!! it gives me just enough room for my coffee mug and a sketch book! :) all i would need is a tiny work bench. heck, i could even sit on the darn thing if i wanted to, depending on the weight-bearing sensitivity. ;) ...overall coolness!!

Great design in function and form. I love that it doesn't look like a working model, but in fact works very slickly, as evidenced at the Toronto show . . . . very cool. As for "cute but irrational", well, let's just say I'll take innovative aggressive design like Saw over poorly made and derivative, and that's not even getting into the insult posted to Mr. Noguchi. Good work Matt. We're going to see more of this piece, I'm sure of it.

Matt
All I have to say is you get better every year with your innovative ideas. People who post bad comments are ones that usually are jealous because they didn't have the capacity of intelligence to come up with this great design. Looking forward to see what your next sassy design will be.
