"5,084,000,000 people 5,360 pages 3,700 years 243 countries 7 books 1 shelf." San Francisco designers Mike and Maaike have created JUXTAPOSED:Religion the first in a series of Juxtaposed curated bookshelves for blankblank. “For the first time, the world’s most influential religious texts are brought together and presented on the same level, their coexistence acknowledged and celebrated.”. The shelf is made of reclaimed hardwood and is offered in a limited edition of 50.

Books out.

Go, Mike and Maaike- level that axis mundi!
This is a pretty beautiful and meaningful piece, and so appropriate as of late. The name is interesting, considering that juxtaposed elements are typically meant to add contrast, and the shelf works against the contrast (successfully).
An harmonious disparity?
the statement about religions is wrong, and the designer knows it. It's made to be filling material for mags and websites.
Hmmm, interesting comments. I can see this as a series of shelves, covering a variety of subjects and acting as a cross between a useful functional shelf with various elements of design and an art installation where the viewer/user is being served up someone else's point of view. It is then up to the new 'owner' as to how it will be presented, accepted or merely used. I like the idea of similar shelves sold or presented empty, leaving it up to the owner to curate the collection and highlight his or her own perspectives.
