All Terrain Cabin
by / October 17, 2006

Canadian design collective BARK has designed, and prototyped, a cabin in a shipping container. Called the All Terrain Cabin, or ATC, it uses a standard ISO shipping container as the basis for the structure and is chock full of Canadian Design and Technology (see the long list here). “The result is as smart as it is efficient, suitable for a family of four and a pet to live off the grid in comfort and contemporary style. It travels by train, truck, ship, airplane or helicopter, folded up and indistinguishable from any ordinary shipping container. Once it arrives, it unfolds rapidly to 480sf of self-contained, sophisticated living space with all the comforts of home.”. Add the Castor Canadensis Sauna Box and the Canadian back country container experience is complete. Thanks Sean!

Interesting project. I've noticed that there have been more country dwellings recently. Is this a coincidence? GR

I enjoy pretty much any project that actually makes good use of the shipping container without being too ridiculous. This looks great, but 480SF for a family of four? I think not. Unless, I suppose, they imagine those four hudled tightly together on those cold Canadian nights.

This looks great!
The next step, i guess, would be modular combination of a few containers like this ;)

THIS IS A GREAT CONCEPT, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT IN PRODUCTION, I
FOUND SOME MORE INFO ON THIS, AT www.inhabitat.com I BELIEVE, FROM WHAT I READ, THAT THEY DID START WITH A 8' X 20' SHIPPING CONTAINER.
I DON'T THINK MANY PEOPLE WOULD USE IT IN THE WINTER THOUGH, SO
FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR ON A WEEKEND GETAWAY, IT'S JUST CLOSE ENOUGH AS TO BE ABLE TO BOND, BUT, NOT STICK...SORRY FOR THE HUMOR.
