"Curated by Tobias Wong and Carlos Salgado, this exhibition of contemporary furniture and objects centers on a group of Brooklyn designers, many who began their careers by working in Manhattan galleries, showrooms, and artists’ studios. When striking out on their own, the designers gravitated to Brooklyn, an environment conducive to craft and the examination of concept and process. This exhibit of limited edition and prototype pieces returns their work to a Manhattan gallery setting.". Now here’s a show I’d like to see, if only because Tobi Wong is curating it (I’ve never met Carlos). Tobi is a designer with a unique vision whose work incorporates subtexts from society, every day life and, because it’s design as well as art, also has function. Now imagine that distinct vision applied to the selection of the best of Brooklyn and you’ve got From A to B and Back Again. Tobi and Carlos have a great line-up featuring work we’ve seen here before, but also some ‘finds’ we haven’t seen. For example the Dany Rose With All Faults crystal above left, Andrew Andrew Cookie with edible label, John Pomp Covered Jars and BDDW Swim Rug (after the jump). There is no little irony in the “[return of] their work to a Manhattan gallery setting” - there is an indescribable tension between the two NYC boroughs, it’s almost as if they were two countries how different they are. The show opens tomorrow.
