We got a sneak peek at the upcoming IKEA 2007 catalog and spotted this headboard with shelves that slide out on either side. It's shelving that's common in most modern kitchens, but just as practical in the bedroom. Called Malm, it's the name of both the headboard and the bed. You can see a side view after the jump.

Wow, very nice design. Practical, too.
Daaaang! I am going to want one of those beds.
They've had the Malm bed for a while. Did they just redesign the headboard and the shelving? (The shelving slides out right?)
They already have this available on the showroom floor (at least in the DC area). The shelving unit cost $199.00 and adds an additional 13" of depth to the bed.
That's pretty neat! I love my 2004 malm bed frame with the attached night stands.
the malm bed has been around for awhile, it's just the headboard with sliding storage that's new. we've had the bed for a while and love it and had a chance to see the new headboard in person the other day--pretty nice.
Cool storage solution, but might not go very well in the small narrow apartments where storage spaces will really be in demand.
sweet action. i have the bed, now i just need to get the shelves
Wow, that is a stunning bed! I think it is exactly what I have been looking for to match my Hand Crafted Grandfather Clock that I recently added to my home.
The headboard shelves are new for the US market.
The last time I checked, they stopped selling the Malm bed in black-brown (aka, espresso).
I'm so bummed considering I bought the black-brown malm bed just a couple of months ago.
Hopefully Ikea will reconsider.
Does anyone know if this will accomodate a boxspring as well? Just got a new mattress/boxspring combo, and I'd love to see it in this.
The Malm frame will accomodate a boxspring. The ledge the matress/boxspring rests on has multi-level adjustment options...
had one of these beds, and they look great. Just be warned that they have very sharp corners and edges which always seem to hit you in the shins.
I saw one of these at Ikea this past weekend. I would have bought it but, the headboard doesn't come in a king size (max queen).
I was told at the Woodbridge, VA store that the Malm in black brown was stocked in some stores for a short time as a test run to decide whether to make it part of the line. Hopefully they'll have it back later this summer.
I have the Malm bed in King size, but Ikea is only offering this in Queen.
The customer service rep I spoke with said, "If it starts to sell, they'll probably wind up making it for all sizes."
I'm happy with the Malm King bed, which I use with their side tables. The only downside is that getting the side tables to hang flush to the bed when attached is not easy. It's taken some custom work on my part to make it look really tight and stable. Clean, unobtrustive design, though.
This bed looks like a box with a bunch of cluster behind it. I personnal feel the bedroom should be clutter free which enables the mind to relax after a long day. mass of books should go in a book case in the hall or living area. But then again thats jst me lol
anyone wanna sell me ANYTHING from the black/brown MALM bed series? frame, bedside tables, dresser, etc.
desparately lookin..
thanks!!
Just curious... It the headboard on casters or is it suspended like a big drawer? Also is there room underneath the bed for underbed storage boxes? I was originally looking at storage beds with drawers, but this headboard is bowling me over!
I purhased the MALM black/brown bed and dresser. Unfortunately, I'm bummed since they are not stocking anything in black/brown anymore. I was hoping to purchase the two low side bed side table, but have been waiting since Feb. 06 for them to restock. It is now September 06 and I'm considering selling the bed frame and purchasing a widely available color (birch?).
Way to go IKEA! Bummer for us.
Does This malm bed set come in black???
Does the Malm headboard come in a full version? If so where can I purchase it ? The IKEA catalog only shows it in Queen and the color maple. I would also like the dark brown color.
I really love the looks and functionality of the Malm Headboard. However I am needing it in a King/White and Ikea is saying it only comes in Queen? Why would they make it in one size only? I truely hope they reconsider and start making it in King Size. There are at least 6 people in Michigan wanting that size.
I don't see it in the catalogue or in the shop. do they really sell it?
I cant believe I wont be able to get the bedside tables in black brown, I already bought the black brown bed in December 06!! that sucks
It's actually not practical. You'll have to get up and reach BEHIND you every time you want to see or get something.
