Heat Pod, Flippant and Tangle
by / May 18, 2006

Laurie Dickason is finishing her degree in Applied and Decorative Arts and has already assembled an attractive portfolio. From left above, Heat Pod is a cast ceramic shoe heater, Flippant is a floral light switch plate and Tangle a cable tidy. She wrote us and asked if we could provide opinions and/or criticisms of her work, and we thought, of course, yes, but why limit it to the editors of MoCo Loco when we can all comment... what's your opinion?

Interesting ideas all, but I think Flippant has the most potential and is probably worth more of your time to push it further with variations and new themes.

I like the Flippant the most. I feel like it would be the easiest and least expensive to mass produce. You can also do more designs within the same idea. The Tangle is cool, but I think it's for a more select market, and you'd have to have more designs. All the pieces are very interesting though, good job!

In response to your comment I am now having Flippant manufactured in woods and plastic's and hope to increase the size to spread across a wall. They will be available to view at new designers this June. I look forward to recieving more comments!

I like the esthetics of Tangle and am definitely intrigued by the potential of Flippant. What other types of designs do you have in mind for the switch plate?

Sabine / May 18, 2006 at 7:25 PM / Flag

Tangle is what definitely caught my attention in this post. Color options would be a major plus! I'd be all over that.

Flippant's concept, I really like, but I get the feeling that I'd not like it as much after it was in my house for a few months. Maybe it's the short attention span in me, but I feel like unless it was modular or easily changeable, I wouldn't be up for it.

Tangle reminds me of the Tetran
; )
Flippant is an interesting concept

hummm...
I like the Flippant idea since it has great design possibilities for every taste level.
how about a more "manly" design as well?
Baroque or arts and Crafts? Mid-centruy inspired, perhaps?
Keep up the good work!

i agree with the other posts. flippant has a broad appeal and looks simple in its execution. interesting to see a series of flippants that you could change according to your mood or the season. also, see how it could be made in a sustainable way. goodstuff.

Hi there, first of all Laurie congratulations not only for your work but also for the will of listening to other opinions ...
I think the three projects are fresh ideas, those kind of objects that should be sold at an available price and that are perfect for a gift idea. I agree with the rest, Flippant is the easiest to manufacture and probably the most fashionable one. I like very much the aesthetics of Tangle, it has great personality.
I think you should find a small, young company such as italian Vice Versa or french Atypyk that will match perfectly your style. Good luck!

I love Flippant. the designs could be tailored to the light switch itself eg art deco, victorian, contemporary.

the other issue is the light switch size itself. The size can vary so it would be difficult to mass produce to one size.

That said, I love it and want to know how to get it. I will be replacing all the light switches in my Californian Bungalow and would like to incorporate this idea into my
choice of switches. Drop me a line Laurie.

I love her work! I am an I.B. art student and I have to do 30 pages of research for my class every 6 weeks and I came across this and I love it. It's very creative and useful, not to mention attractive!

Patriza,
I currently have flippant available in metal and highly polished acrylic in any colour of your choice and finish to match your interiors. I am also looking into the possibility of producing designs in leather too. Or I can produce individual designs to order. Thank you for your interest please contact me at lauriedickason@hotmail.com
or view my current work at new designers in islington in the first week from the 28th to the 2nd july.
kind regards
laurie

I love flippant - pretty, girlie and a nice feature. How big do they get?

Sarah / June 22, 2006 at 9:46 AM / Flag

Absolutely love all of these designs but in particular the flippant; what a clever, innovative idea and it makes such an impact. I would love to buy this for my child room as a feature since she is so keen on switching her light on and off! Fantastic work!

Jo Kimberley-Smith / July 9, 2006 at 5:54 AM / Flag

I felt that the Flippant only served to frame and draw attention to an ugly plastic lightswitch. Putting a dramatic fancy frame around an ugly object I don't think works well. If you could incorporate an actual lightswitch plate design that was attractive it would be a major plus. The shoepot didn't seem to have any merit either; it's just a plant-type cachepot you throw shoes in; it doesn't make the shoes look good, conceal them, etc. and it doesn't look particularly functional at the job of heating the shoes since they don't seem to really fit into the pot well. I hate to say I felt the same way about the Tangle; it doesn't make the cords look or function any better but just draws attention to something that's basically ugly. Also in practical use I don't think the Tangle at all compares to multiple other options I've seen that also were far more attractive. Sorry to be so negative but I felt there were some "blind spots" in your designs and everyone was just giving you positive comments I thought it might help to give you some reasons I personally wouldn't buy these items.

Hey,
love your designs specially your flippant would love to hear more about it and whether its just decorative or the floral motif is functional as well.
