Solar Lampion
by / May 15, 2006

+ Damian O'Sullivan has created a solar lampion you use inside (or out). "Most solar lamps today are of the type that you 'plant' in your garden and then leave unattended. They store energy during the day and release it in the form of light at night, which is nice. But what if we could bring this light with us, into the home? The Solar Lampion is such a lamp. It is composed of an array of 36 'standard size' solar cells (held together by an open spaced frame), each of which is connected to an LED bulb, which is fed by one rechargeable battery. The solar cells store the sun's energy during the day and release it at nightfall wherever you need it.". Thanks Damian!

For some reason that blue plastic chair arouses me. I'm not kidding.

I called 0900-design to check if they sell the Solar Lampion and then sent them an email with this post and they haven't replied. I'll try again today.

Just got an email from 0900, they're looking into getting some. I'll post another comment when they confirm.

Harry / May 19, 2006 at 10:37 AM / Flag

Why bother telling us about this lamp if there's no way to get it? What gives?

Brian / May 31, 2006 at 5:01 PM / Flag

Why? Because we're a design blog, not a store. We seek out what we believe to be exceptional design for the home (mostly). Everything we feature ought be manufactured. If it isn't, we hope the comments you leave here will help get it made. I know Damian O'Sullivan has got the message. He now knows the Solar Lampion will be popular. He probably knew before, but now he knows to what degree. I suspect all the links and comments will make a tangible difference and this product will eventually come to market. BTW, 0900 wrote me back (thank you) and told me that they had contacted Damian and that the lampion was a prototype, but that they would email us once it was ready for sale. Good ideas have to start somewhere. Why not here?

Has anyone seen one in the flesh? Is it very heavy? What kind of power storage does it have?

Any good idea and design is worth posting - even if not in production yet, it could be at least an inspiration
