Thanks everyone for the thoughtful MoCo Loco redesign comments. There’s a lot to chew on in terms of suggestions, and directions we can go in. In fact, based on your comments, here’s what I’ve included in the brief for the designer/ integrators next week:
- More RSS options(!)
- More visual approach
- Less scrolling
- KISS
As for more color, we’re counting on the content to provide the color. And, as for screen size, a lot of you have big screens, check this out: http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=stats&s=s18freshmoco&r=73.
I'm not quite sure if you're suggesting this, but just in case: just because I've got a big screen doesn't mean I want to dedicate it to web browsing.
I keep mine at around 700-800 pixels wide, even though my display does 1680x1050. If I had a larger display, I'd still keep it at that width.

Yeah, me too. I have a big display, but my browser window is like 700 pixels wide, and I don't want to change that.
A suggestion: look into CSS in terms of malleable site layout. For instance, you could easily have the site reference different stylesheets depending on how people use their browser. That way it could look appropriate on my 20" iMac and my 12" Powerbook.
I know there are sites that allow the user to toggle between various layouts, but I don't have an example handy.
A good example for a changing site layout would be Amazon, which re-arranges its content based on browser width, and did this for now already close to 10 years.
I will second (third? fourth?) the need for more RSS options. Basically when I read MoCo Loco in my RSS reader I get: A. no photos B. cropped entries. Both of those factor into the fact that I won't click through to read the post or recommend it on other sites. Cheers and good luck for the new design!
