edilportale has announced the winners of its LIVINGBOX Prefabricated Living Unit Design Competition. Two designs share first place, Architektburo [lu:p] and Alessandro Baldo’s ‘Mokka’ (above). Both are modular prefab, where you can ‘snap on’ units making them larger or smaller depending on the need. Unfortunately, the chances they’ll get built, and sell? Very low. The building industry is very conventional and prefers ‘off-the-shelf’ materials and these designs look far-from-the-shelf. There are designs we’d like to see built though; Mecca Giuseppe, pop-out for use/ pop-in to lock up, Gruppo Tau, similar principle, unfold to expand (we’d screen in the open parts though, like B+V), Puzzle expands upwards nicely, and Metrocubico reminds us of Delta Shelter. I think it's going to take a lot of time before an architect can convince more than just the rich and peculiar to live in a molded home shaped as the contemporary teardrop. But oh, how they try.
