Brasilia + New Baghdad
by / January 18, 2006

Saw these tables a while back, but they've now been officially issued by Edra. That's Brasilia above. From the Edra site, these "two sculpture tables are dedicated to cities. One (Brasilia) is the work of Fernando and Humberto Campana, the Brazilian brothers who are stars of the international design world. The other (New Baghdad) is by the Israeli Ezri Tarazi, a lecturer in design at the Bezalel academy, the oldest institute in Jerusalem (founded 100 years ago), who joins Edra's multi-ethnic creative team with this project. Two capitals, the first, Brasilia, a concentration of modernity. The second capital is Baghdad, the new Babylon, a symbol of multiple, ethnic, cultural and religious identities, a sort of concentration of all humanity. (In) Brasilia, a chaotic assemblage of shiny splinters, aims to be a metaphor for the very stones that the capital of Brazil stands on. The top of the New Baghdad table is made up of tens of different industrial aluminium profiles each one with a specific purpose, which together make up a map of the capital of Iraq, ploughed by river Tigris.".
