The Architecture Of Brian Mackay-Lyons.
"He is considered a leading proponent of regional, vernacular design, yet is innovative and edgy enough to be part of last year's 'Emerging Voices' series organized by the New York Architectural League.". Or so says Architectural Record of Halifax-based architect Brian MacKay-Lyons. Combine modernism, regional architectural forms (boats, barns, and sheds), local building practices and materials and you've got the modern regionalist architectural language AR is referring to. MacKay-Lyons is probably best known for the Kutcher house, a rectilinear house perched on a 100-foot-long granite outcropping on the coast of Nova Scotia that most illustrates "modern regionalism". I haven't actually seen the book, but the Amazon images are mostly residential as is the MacKay-Lyons portfolio. Paperback, 224 pages, 200 color images, $26.40 at Amazon.
