UPDATE: Boy, did I ever get that wrong. Eric writes "The Ove birdcage is by Francis Turgeon, Table a Dessin is by Eric Demay & Marie-Helene Charest, Particule is by Elaine Fortin and Velocite is by Guillaume Lazure & Eric Leonard. Patrick Evans and Maurice Cloutier are the tutors that directed the workshops in which these objects were created. And I thought I could read french. Merci Eric. At ICFF a few short weeks ago I saw some captivating student work and some surprising creativity (Turf, that's you), and at SIDIM I saw the same quality but an added level of refinement and professionalism. Simple things, like the Ove bird cage above by Patrick Evans, Table a dessin drawing table by Patrick Evans/ Marie-Helene Charest and Particule, a flexible modular unit system (also by Patrick), and the more complex Velocite bike and stand system by Eric Leonard and Maurice Cloutier. All were from the local UQAM school of design, and all were published in a beautifully designed book. Concordia University was there, l'Ecole du Meuble, as were students from other schools. I can't caption everything right now, but I'll try to get to it in the next day or so.

Table a Dessin is by Eric Demay and Marie-Helene Charest.

Particule, a flexible modular unit system by Elaine Fortin.

Velocite bike and stand system by Guillaume Lazure & Eric Leonard.

The local natural gas monopoly was showing some innovative student mock-ups for the fireplace-of-the-future. My favorite requirement - no fake logs allowed. This is Lisseth Moreira and her coffee table fireplace. The inside of the table is the fireplace. It can be adjusted so that the fire/heat is lit in the section of the table that's closest to the one who wants the heat.

Another fireplace-of-the-future. This time heat from below moves the metal plates back and forth to reveal the waves of heat.
