Jaspar Jansen and Jeroen Dellensen started i29 about three years ago. They have been working as a team on many furniture and architecture projects. They call their furniture "Leefmachines" (machines for living), because almost everything you do in your apartment is embedded into a single structure. Cooking, bathing, working, etc.

After thirteen years in Milan, Theo Williams recently opened another office in Amsterdam. The new office will also bring him closer to Mexx. A Dutch fashion label he became design director of this year.

The designs and art directions of Theo Williams for large brands like Armani, Prada, Alessi and Benetton are simply stunning. A design studio of this caliber is a welcome addition to the design world in Amsterdam.

I don't think I'll have to introduce Droog Design. Except maybe to tell you they have a pilot store in Amsterdam (closed at the moment). Droog Design is possibly still the most renowned design label based in The Netherlands. Their first shows at the Milan Furniture Fair made waves they still ride on. Their popularity is so big it's almost impossible to live up to the expectations. Decide for yourself if they did with this year's new lineup of products you see here.

It's hard to describe the jewelry of Ted Noten. If they have one thing in common it's that they all tell you something about the concept of value. This translates into broches made from a Mercedes exterior and a real mouse with a pearl necklace casted in resin to name a few examples. It's obvious Ted Noten has quite a few stories to tell looking at the never failing conceptual works he produced over the past years.

Nicolette Brunklaus started her design label Brunklaus with a small collection of printed products. Lamp shades with a forest print on the inside, or outside, birch print "log" lamps and a set of blond curled hair print curtains. The blond hair curtains never hit the market, but are available on request. I have seen them once and I am sure they are worth the extra money.

Design for People is a new Dutch design label by Marc de Groot. It launched in 2003 and sells to distributors only. The Design for People product range counts eight products and should be enough to furnish a small apartment.

Marc Th van der Voorn is the designer and founder of AAN-UIT. A lighting design label based in Amsterdam. Marc's 2001 TURN-oN lamp, a folded and printed plastic lamp, got him a lot of attention and kicked off an impressive product line of five lamp designs.

You'll find Ozenfant in one of the "9 straatjes". The best shopping area Amsterdam has to offer. Ozenfant is a bit strange find for Dutch standards. I can't name another design label that is as luxurious as Ozenfant. That's probable, because luxury is seen as a bad thing in The Netherlands. Something you should hide. That's why I love Ozenfant so much. They don't care and opened a 4 story store two years ago. Their product range expanded to about 50 in house designed products.

If you're looking for student work and prototypes, visit Galerie K.I.S. - which stands for Kunst in Serie (Art in Series). At the door it looks like a small store, but when you get in you'll see there is no end to it. The interior is a combination of two or more buildings. The products they sell are all small series productions and in many cases a single prototype. Quality depends... so please don't expect too much.

Studio91 is an initative by six young designers. Hester Slaman, Marc Th. van der Voorn, Annemee Struijk, Bram Doyer, Roos Arends en Heidi van Leersum. They show and sell their work at Studio91. Worth a visit.

Post Amsterdam, formerly known as Pakhuis Amsterdam, opened it's doors a couple of months ago in the old Dutch post office near Amsterdam Central Station. They share the same building with Stedelijk Museum, a hip and trendy restaurant/club and a lot of small and some large design studios. They don't see it as a store. More as a place where furniture companies present their work. What I've gathered from information by designers, the fees to "present" your work are so high most designers can't afford it. Which makes it a price based presentation, not a quality based. A shame really....

The Frozen Fountain is located at the Prinsengracht canal in Amsterdam. The oldest and most beautiful part of Amsterdam. They specialize in Dutch design and organize expos for up and coming Dutch designers on a regular basis. It's Amsterdam's first stop when it comes to design shopping.
